Trauma and release

Helping you to find safety in the present moment through your body

What is Trauma Sensitive Yoga?

Trauma Sensitive Yoga is a gentle way of working with the body to start to heal the mind. Many of us live with trauma, whether that’s childhood trauma, an accident, a form of abuse. Trauma takes many forms and has a huge impact on the brain and the body.

Trauma may start to show up for us through triggers in our environment, illness, anxiety and depression, trouble sleeping and bad dreams, muscle tension or a serious form of disassociation.

The brain struggles to differentiate between the memory of the trauma and the actual trauma, we can find ourselves being re-traumatised through triggers in our environment.

How does Trauma Sensitive Yoga work?

Using Trauma Sensitive Yoga, I create a safe space for those I’m working with.

We practice breathing techniques that help to bring the body out of “fight and flight” and activate the para-sympathetic nervous system. This allows the brain and the body to have time to rest.

We incorporate poses that help the body to relax and release tension further and explore what feels good or safe for our body, becoming aware of sensations we experience and creating choice around these.

We slowly build this mind body connection, befriending the body again so that we build up the ability to stay in this state of rest. This brings us back into the present moment and develops a sense of empowerment.

The impact of our work

“I feel like I carry a weight around with me, in my body… when I do these yoga classes with Anna, the weight is gone”
Survivor of sexual abuse.

By releasing the trauma from our bodies we open up the possibility for us to experience the joy of being fully present.
